Life as an Israeli Uni student

October 8, 2013

Sam Mansberg recently returned from Israel after spending a semester on a Masa study abroad program studying at the Rothberg International School at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The semester began with a one-month Ulpan (Hebrew learning course), which was somewhat of an orientation period. We had a number of activities planned for us and got to meet all the other international students, as well as sort out our classes. Rothberg is an international school where the focus is divided between the educational content as well as gaining new experiences of living in Israel. Therefore the workload wasn’t as intense as a semester of university in Australia and as students we had ample time to form relationships and explore Israel. The courses themselves were fascinating and were taught by very knowledgeable professors and I studied courses that focused on the Middle East conflict.

The village itself has a bar and laundromat and is within a 5 minute walk of a supermarket, cafes, and a gym. I, like all international students lived with others studying at Rothberg. Everyone lives in an apartment with their own private bedroom but shares a common kitchen, lounge room and bathrooms with 4 others. My roommates were from Canada and the US, but I got to meet people from all over the world.

On weekends my friends and I travelled all over the country from Tiberius to Eilat, and often went to Tel Aviv just for a night out by private Sherut (mini-bus) With everyone being an exchange student, there was never a dull moment. Even weekly group Shabbat dinners became an event we all looked forward to. The many Jewish holidays also meant that every second week was a long weekend.

Sam blog picThese festivals were without a doubt the highlight of my semester. From the 4-day Purim celebrations in Tel Aviv to the contrasting emotions of Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut in Jerusalem, there was always an exciting buzz that came with living there. But, as with all trips, it was the people I met that made the semester the experience that it was.  I now have strong friendships with other Jews just like me across North America, who I regularly keep in touch with and already plan to visit.
