The program offers school leavers to experience university life for a semester with the opportunity to gain university credit for future study back home. The university offers electives in humanities, languages, social, political, sciences, fine and performing arts.

 

The gap year program gives you an exciting and unique way to enter university life as an international first-year student. You’ll make new friends from around the world while experiencing Israel’s rich and vibrant culture through field trips, social activities, and courses, including Hebrew, Israel, and Middle East studies. Jerusalem will be a second classroom for you, full of colorful sights, sounds, smells, and tastes.

 

The First-Year Study Abroad program will strengthen your research and writing skills and provide you with strong academic and social support. It will give you a solid initiation into academic study, and the credits you earn will be transferable to most top-tier colleges and universities abroad. After completing your first year at HebrewU, you’ll be prepared for success at a range of top-notch institutions around the world.

 

The university also offers two special interest programs:

 

DanceJerusalem  – offers university-level artistic and technical training in the disciplines of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance Choreography. Our DanceJerusalem program will give you the artistic training and inspiration to create and perform meaningful works. This joint initiative of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD) Hebrew University’s and the Rothberg International School (RIS) allows you to benefit from the expertise and support of two highly respected institutions. JAMD’s dance courses will push you to reach beyond your physical limits and give you the confidence to create, rehearse, and perform your own works. You will also explore Israel’s rich and vibrant culture through field trips, social activities, and courses on Hebrew language, Israel, and the Middle East.

 

ArtJerusalem – The ArtJerusalem Program will give you artistic training and provide you with continuous inspiration to create. Choose courses from diverse areas including painting, sculpture, jewellery and fashion, photography, and visual communications. You’ll also explore Israel’s rich and vibrant culture through field trips, social activities, and courses on Hebrew language, Israel, and the Middle East. This joint initiative of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem and Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School (RIS) gives you the benefits of two renowned institutions in one program.

Curriculum

Studies begin with a pre-semester ulpan (intensive Hebrew-language course) and the First-Year orientation, where you’ll get to know your peers and familiarize yourself with the university campus and the city of Jerusalem.

During the semester, your Hebrew-language studies will continue, and you’ll have the option to take a First-Year writing workshop that pairs with one of your core courses. In the workshop, you’ll develop your critical thinking skills and personal voice, and master the conventions of academic writing. The remainder of your credits will be taken in introductory-level courses in Jewish, Israel, and Middle East studies, as well as in social sciences, business, and communications.

Program Structure & Credits

Your studies will begin with the mandatory September Undergraduate Ulpan or Winter Ulpan  (5 credits), depending on your starting date. You may earn 12-15 credits per semester:

  • Modern Hebrew (6-7 credits)
  • Two or three introductory-level courses (3 credits per course)
  • Community service option
